Why do children's stories, poems and novels featuring animals capture our Imagination, appealing to so many people through the generations? MICHAEL MORPURGO takes a trip down memory lane to find out. I now live in deepest Devonshire. I still see larksrising over the fields and hares chasing to and fro. But here there are glimpses of otters, too, and salmon jumping, and kingfishers on the river, flashing by, and buzzards mewing over the hills. I can hear woodpeckers knocking on hollow trees and barnowls screeching at night. The fox and the badger and the deer are all near neighbours, albeit fleetingly seen.
