Sleep structure in medicated schizophrenia: A pilot study using cyclic alternating pattern method

This study aims to clarify the sleep structure in medicated schizophrenia using the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) method. Seven patients meeting the criteria for schizophrenia in ICD-10 (m/f 4/3: age 15 to 51 years) participated. The CAP rate significantly correlated with age (r = -0.929), and the duration of disease (r = -0.786). However, the CAP rate had no correlation with Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale scores and the dosage of drugs taken, medicines such as benzodiazepines and antipsychotics. The results show that the CAP oscillating system, which is composed of the arousal-related neurons, may gradually deteriorate in correspondence to aging and the duration of the patient's schizophrenia.
