Alkyl and aryl disulfidcs are reduced by zinc powder in the presence of AlCli in aqueous media to yield zinc thiolates.This thiolate union species then react with alkyl tosylates to give sulfides in high to excellent yields.Historically,the chemistry of sulfides has been relatively well studied.
