Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by prolonged inflammatory changes that occur from exposure of the lungs and airway to noxious gas particles (e.g., tobacco smoke, occupational dust, and chemicals), resulting in limitation of airflow.1'2 Spirometry is typically used to determine airflow limitation (obstruction). During this evaluation, the patient inhales to total lung capacity and then performs forced expiratory maneuvers. Key parameters obtained from spirometry include forced expiratory volume (FEV!) and the total volume of air exhaled during the entire spirometric maneuver (forced vital capacity [FVC]).3
