Today's steelmakers, in order to maintain their competitive edge, must implement methods for monitoring quality on-line and in a nondestructive way. On-line quality monitoring does of course lead to reduced production costs, and the reason for this is twofold. First, quality monitoring minimises scrap, as deviations with respect to customer set constraints are detected early and countermeasures can be taken in time. Furthermore, quality monitoring makes it possible to operate plant equipment in a consistent and efficient way, thus avoiding wear and shortened service life due to out-of-specification working conditions.
