Antidepressants are among the most widely prescribed medications in the U.S.1 In part, this may be related to the apparent increase in the prevalence of depression, which has been noted since the mid-20th century.2 In addition to treating the various types of depression (such as major depression, dysthymia, and sometimes bipolar depression), antidepressants are widely used in anxiety disorders, fibromyalgia, and pain management.
