Oil-in-Water (0/W) emulsion, with adequate plate out and emulsion stability, good burn off, low carbon forming tendency and high extreme pressure characteristics, plays a very important role in providing satisfactory rolling performance in an industrial mill. Semi-synthetic rolling oil was developed after screening a number of candidate oils and the best candidate was evaluated in the experimental rolling mill against reference (in-use) oil. Subsequently, field trial was conducted with the best candidate oil in an industrial mill. Newly developed oil had given sustained rolling performance. This paper describes the systematic development work of this oil.
