Around 14:46 on March 11th, 2011, the M9 Great East Japan Earthquake, the largest ever observed in Japan, struck offthe Sanriku coast. Strong tremors from the quake were felt over a wide range extending from Tohoku to Kanto. In Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture, a reading of 7 (the maximum value on the seismic intensity scale of the Japan Meteorological Agency) was recorded.
