With its miles of sandy beach, quaint cottages and bustling high street, Carnoustie in Angus looks the perfect picture of a rural Scottish seaside town. Famous for its golf courses and beautiful coastline, its townspeople are hands-on, practical sortswho keep the local hardware shop thriving. The little town sums up the essence of community. But, unlike the other five main towns that make up the district of Angus, Carnoustie (population 12,000) didn't have an allotment site until last year. That's when a bunch of enterprising, 'can do' folk, in collaboration with Angus Council, opened the first Carnoustie allotments. The site, Berryfield, a former fruit farm, now has 42 plots, sandwiched between houses on gently sloping land running down to a small stream, or burn, as it's known north of the border.
