Gross Domestic Product by Metropolitan Area Newly Available Statistics for 2006 Revised Statistics for 2004-2005

ECONOMIC growth was widespread in metropolitan areas across the United States in 2006. Inflation-adjusted, or real, gross domestic product (GDP) grew in 308 of 363 metropolitan areas, largely as a result of strong growth in financial industries. Of those 308 metropolitan areas, 177 accelerated from their 2005 growth rate. GDP growth in the metropolitan portion of the United States was 3.2 percent in 2006, slightly greater than the 3.1 percent growth in 2005.
