Sugarcane variety census: Florida 2010.

This annual variety census of the Florida sugarcane undustry for the 2010-2011 harvest season is the latest series of annual reports. The main objectives of this annual census are to: 1. report cultivar preferences of Florida sugarcane growers; 2. summarize the more popular cultivars by crop age; 3. describe the percent distribution of sugarcane acreage and popular cultivars across soil type (organic "muck" versus sand soils); and 4. summarize plant-cane planting strategies (fallow versus successive) for the more popular Florida sugarcane cultivars. A total of 389 616 acres of sugarcane were reported for the 2010-2011 cropping season. This represents an increase of 2 921 acres compared with the 386 695 acres growing during the 2009-2010 harvest season. Florida growers reported growing 25 sugarcane cultivars in 2010 compared with 24 (2009) and 21 (2008).Nine cultivars (CP 88-1762, CP 89-2143, CP 80-1743, CP 78-1628, CP 84-1198, CP 96-1252, CP 72-2086, CP 00-1101, CP 89-2376) each occupied at least 1.0% of the total Florida sugarcane area which is the minimum percentage required to be defined as "principal cultivar".
