World sugar production in 1997/98 is forecast at 122.4 million tons, about the same as the previous year's revised estimate. Based on expected continued strong demand, world sugar trade in 1997/98 is forecast to rise 1 percent to a record 36 million tons. World sugar consumption in 1997/98 is forecast at a record 125 million metric tons, 2 percent above the previous year's level and 6 percent above the 1995/96 level. Stronger demand is likely in many chief consuming countries, especially those in Asia and South America. These increases are based on a mix of factors including higher consumer incomes, population growth, and rising demand for sugar containing products such as soft drinks and processed foods.
