Honey Situation and Outlook in Selected Countries

Honey production in six major producing countries in 1996 is forecast at 338,000 metric tons, down 26 percent from 1995. Reduced honey output is expected in China, Argentina, Germany, Canada, and the United States, which together account for about 60and 90 percent of selected country production and exports, respectively. Honey exports from these countries in 1996 are forecast to decrease 18 percent to 174,000 tons. World honey prices strengthened in 1995, and have remained strong in 1996 due to reduced honey supplies. U.S. honey imports in 1996 are forecast to increase sharply, due to reduced domestic supplies. Continued promotion campaigns in principal U.S. markets, such as in the Middle East, should maintain U.S. exports in 1996 at about the previous year's level.
