In 2016, Ukraine government will sharply raise the minimum purchasing prices for sugar at the domestic market and set the special quota for manufacturers which they should sell to the national consumers. This decision is connected with the acute crisis of sugar industry that broke out in the country last year with the decrease of sugar production by 29.6% to 1.466 million tonnes, compare with 2.1 million tonnes in 2014, follows from the data of the Ukraine State Statistical Service. The information from the Ukraine Union of Sugar Manufacturers (Ukrsahar) also suggests that over the recent two years almost 20% of all sugar plants in the country became unprofitable and went bankrupt. Currently in the country there are still operating40 sugar plants, and most of them are balancing on the verge of profitability. The government initiative is the last possible chance to save the industry, say market participants.
