Much of this lack of awareness is around the titles and status of titles which describe or protect a surveyor's activities, or provide protection for the public from activities of surveyors. The Cadastral Survey Act 2002 made changes to the Survey Act 1986. These changes did not only make changes within Land Information New Zealand but also dissolved the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and the Survey Board of New Zealand. The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors which had a statutory basis was replaced by the voluntary professional organisation now called New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (Inc) (NZIS). The Survey Board of New Zealand was replaced by the Cadastral Surveyor's Licensing Board of New Zealand. As a result, some statutory terms were also changed.
