GDP and the Economy Advance Estimates for the First Quarter of 2012

REAL GROSS domestic product (GDP) increased 2.2 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter of 2012, according to the advance estimates of the national income and product accounts (NIPAs) (chart 1 and table 1). In the fourth quarter of 2011, real GDP increased 3.0 percent. The deceleration in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected a deceleration in inventory investment and a downturn in nonresidential fixed investment that were partly offset by accelerations in consumer spending and in exports.
