Because port/harbor steel structures are exposed to severely corrosive environments, the inappropriate application of corrosion protection and maintenance is likely to cause fatal structural deterioration, such as a significant reduction of loading capacity. During the period of high economic growth in Japan from the latter part of the 1950s through the 1960s, numerous port/harbor facilities were constructed, as were many other steel structures. At that time, corro-sion-protection technologies for such structures had not yet been established, in contrast to the current rapid progress of these technologies. Accordingly, among the structures constructed then, there were some that suffered severe deterioration due to concentrated corrosion.
