Bridges and other highway facilities are considered to be sources of noise and vibration, and notable among these sources are the expansion joints of bridges. As a countermeasure to the noise and vibration produced by bridge expansion joints, the "expansion floor slab method" has recently applied. In this method, floor slabs are extended to the ground beyond the abutment piers and the expansion joints are separated from the bridge to mitigate the noise and vibrations that are otherwise inherent in bridge structures. This paper reports the results obtained by studying extension floor slabs, auxiliary bridge devices, mainly in relation to bridge behavior.
