Authors conducted on-site surveys of 50 orthotropic steel deck bridges (OSD) in Japan as a joint research project. As a result of these surveys, not only fatigue damages of steel members but also many damages were observed in asphalt pavement of OSD subjected to severe fatigue environments by heavy traffic. One of the most common damage was longitudinal cracking over the weld of deck plate and limb. Also found were many cases of rutting caused by pavement fiuidization. These damages may significantly influence local stress on the weld of deck plate and U-rib. This paper discusses the influence of pavement damage on the local stress of OSD.
