The re-expansion project for Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) includes a 1,100-m long island for the D-Runway located at the mouth of the Tama River. Because of this, the island had to be constructed in a manner that would not impede water flow in the area. Additionally, several challenging requirements were imposed on the island's construction work: to reduce the number of steel pipe piles to be driven, to shorten the construction term by means of member prefabrication, and to abide by restrictions placed on construction work due to flight operations at the existing airport. To this end, a jacket-type pier structure was adopted for construction of the 1,100-m long island. The following discusses the manufacture and installation of the jackets, the steel pipe pile loading tests, the construction of the connection taxiway, and the area that connects the reclaimed area and pier section.
