ISSCT engineering workshop on energy management in raw cane sugar factories

The Berlin Sugar Institute, part of the Technical University of Berlin, was host to the Engineering Workshop from 7th to 11th October 2002. A total of 68 people registered for the workshop, which was presided over by Lynne Wong, the ISSCT Factory Section chairman, and Pedro Avram, the chairman of the German section of ISSCT. The technical discussions were full and fruitful, and were held on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the Workshop. On the other two days, visits were arranged to two of the large beet sugar factories that have recently been built in what was previously East Germany. Topics covered during the workshop included: energy conservation from cane yard to extraction plant, in the boiling house and in refineries; improvements to boiler and turbo generator efficiencies; the use of alternative fuels as well as bagasse; efficient use of steam and power; new technologies, equipment and control systems.
