The Australian sugar industry is a world leader in the production and marketing of consistently high-quality raw sugar. As Australia's second largest export crop and the largest rural commodity for the State of Queensland, sugar is a major contributor to the Australian economy with total sales of more than 1 billion dollar annually. The Australian sugar industry is largely based in Queensland which produces about 95 percent of Australia's raw sugar with the remainder produced in northern New South Wales. Australia is the third largest sugar exporter in the world, with Queensland exporting about 85 percent of the nation's annual production. The Australian sugar industry is made up of more than 7,200 independent cane growers, who, for the most part, operate family farms. In Queensland, the number of cane growers exceeds 6,500. Sugarcane is grown along the 2,100 km coastal strip along Australia's eastern coastline from Mossman and the Atherton Tablelands in north Queensland to Grafton in northern New South Wales.
