There are about 1,900 small capacity re-rolling mills in India with 5,000-50,000 tons/annum capacity to produce the small merchant products. Small re-rollers are not keen to invest money for constructing energy efficient furnaces. Petroleum Conservation Research Association, New Delhi sponsored a project to Research & Development Centre for Iron & Steel for implementing the retrofitting measures to improve efficiency of reheating furnaces of small re-rolling mills. An initial survey indicated higher specific fuel consumption and scale loss in the range of 50-60 litre/tonne and 2.5-3.0 % respectively. Higher rejections were found due to poor quality of heating and frequent breakdowns.
