Abstracts from the SPRI 2008 conference: diversifying research in sugar processing.

The abstracts of 24 papers presented at the conference are given. A wide range of topics are discussed: upgrading sugarmills to biorefineries; biotechnology; sugar industry; sugar processing (crystallization, clarification); sugar processing errors; equipments for air pollution control and sugar processing; anti-obesity properties of sugarcane polyphenols; valorization of lime sludge from sugarbeet industry by production of compost; role of sugarcane breeding and selection in the development of bioenergy systems; increasing competitiveness of the sugar industry through biofuels in the Caribbean; bioconversion of sugar processing wastes into energy; resolution of problems associated with processing molasses desugarization extract; environmental impact management; dust explosion protection for fine sugar grinding; commercial production of fullerenes from cane molasses; indirect real-time measurement of sugar solution colour; hard-to-boil massecuites phenomenon and introduction of oscillatory deformation rheology to the sugar industry.
