This work introduces the modelling of absorption and scattering phenomena in a heterogeneous medium of an annular type photo-reactor. The random walk model was applied to the prediction of the light intensity distribution and the Monte Carlo approach was used for the simulation isotropic and non-isotropic (forward, backward and side) scattering modes were considered. The model results of the light intensity distribution profiles in a homogeneous medium and a heterogeneous medium were verified theoretically and experimentally. For the experimental system, the heterogeneous medium was made by using TiO_2 particles, air bubbles and water and was irradiated by a diffuse light source. The effects of the cross sectional areas of absorption and scattering on the light intensity distribution profiles and on the fraction of light absorption are discussed.
