Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and the former Department of Survey and Land Information, and Lands and Survey have had a varying involvement in surveying and mapping in Antarctica since the late 1950s. In 2000 LINZ developed an annual programme of geodetic work in the Ross Sea Region of Antarctica. Since 2007-2008 LINZ has been a partner in the International Polar Year (IPY) core geophysical project Polar Earth Observing Network, (POLENET). Through this project LINZ has been able to extend and continue to develop the Ross Sea Region Geodetic Datum 2000 (RSRGD2000) which was implemented in 2000. In this, part seven, on a series of articles on the New Zealand geodetic system the current geodetic initiatives that LINZ is supporting in Antarctica is described, focusing on the POLENET project.
