Thin films of the Tl-based high-temperaturesuperconducting (HTS) phases are beginning to find application ina number of practical devices, especially in the field of microwavecommunication systems. This review describes the issuessurrounding the fabrication of thin films of the thallium-basedHTS materials. The influence of thermodynamics and kinetics, thevarious potential thalliation techniques and the selection of anappropriate substrate material are all important considerationswhen designing a process for the fabrication of thin films of thesehighly reactive materials. The properties of the resulting films arecritically dependent on the microstructures developed duringthalliation. Microstructural evolution during thalliation, the effectof structural defects on the properties of such films and theimportance of achieving biaxial grain alignment in optimizing theproperties of the films are all discussed.
