Technical note general design formula for tapered, conduction-cooled current lead utilizing high temperature superconducting tapes

An analytical model for optimizing the length ofHTS tapes in a tapered current lead is derived. A general equationto calculate the heat leak is given. Numerical results obtained fordifferent sheath alloys used in the tapes show that the optimumlength is extremely sensitive to alloy composition.
