The superconducting magnet system for the newstellarator Wendelstein7-X, to be located at Greifswald,Germany, consists of 50 non-planar and 20 planar large magnetcoils. The conductor used is a cable-in-conduit type, composedof copper stabilized NbTi strands and enveloped by analuminium alloy jacket (CICC). The individual winding packsare built up from six (three) double layers, glass insulated andresin impregnated. A cast steel casing encapsulates eachwinding pack to achieve sufficient mechanical stiffness. Thetoroidal set-up of the coil system weighs 400 tons and has adiameter of 11 metres. Operation will be at 6 T and a coilcurrent of 1.75MA. Cooling is provided by supercritical helium.A fast de-energizing system protects the magnet fromoverheating in the case of a quench.
