New desulphurisation route for heavy fuel oil

According to Bunkerworld, US-based Alternative Petroleum Technology is aiming to apply its oxidative desulphurisation process-already in use for distillate fuels like diesel-to heavy fuel oil, with the intention of producing low sulphur fuels for marine use. According to APT, oxidative desulphurisation requires little heat and pressure. The base fuel is exposed to the APT catalyst in the presence of an oxidiser (hydrogen peroxide) which oxidises the sulphur compounds in the fuel, making them easier to remove.
