Rock of Ages stone-processing center

As a leader in the fabrication of memorials and mausoleums, Rock of Ages Corp. owns and operates manufacturing facilities in both the U.S. and Canada. Its 250,000-square-foot plant in Barre, VT, is among the largest integrated granite fabrication facilities in the world, reports the company, adding that it produces more than 40,000 units a year. Once quarried, blocks are first taken to a 20,000-square-foot saw plant, which is located near the Barre quarries. At this facility, diamond wire saws with 12-foot-diameter blades cut the blocks into slabs of various thicknesses. The slabs are then transported in flatbed trucks about 1 mile down the road to Rock of Ages' fabrication plant, which houses an assortment of state-of-the-art machinery. Among the equipment in the stone-processing plant are several Pellegrini wire saws, two Thibaut flat polishers, a Simec FP1200 bridge saw and a Park Industries Hydrasplit. Additionally, handtools are used for detailed carvings and finishing work.
