Vocal fold palsy after surgery in elderly thyroid cancer patients with versus without comorbid diabetes.

To the Editors:Diabetes mellitus was associated with a statistically significant increased risk of vocal fold palsy (VFP) preoperatively in patients who underwent thyroid surgery between 1995 and 1999 at a single institution in Germany, but the association was not statistically significant postoperatively (ie, 5/44 or 11.4% of diabetic patients versus 49/586 or 8.4% of nondiabetic patients; P=.26).
