Preparation and Characterization of Low Cost Adsorbent Carbons

In recent years various carbons from different species have been prepared and are in use as adsorbents for defluoridation studies as well as for other purposes. The materials used for the preparation of carbons include coconut shells (J), sulphonated coconut shell carbon (2), tea waste carbon and ground nut shell carbon (3), coffee husk carbon (4), avaram bark (5), rice husk carbon (6), bone carbon (7) etc., for defluoridation purposes. Dried eichhnornia species (#), activated alumina (9), activated bauxite alum (70)etc., have been used as adsorbents in defluoridation techniques. The studies have indicated that these adsorbents were not effective in decreasing fluoride content in water and showed poor additional characteristics, suggesting the need to research on effective and economical fluoride adsorbents for small and medium scale level operations with a little expenditure for maintenance.
