THE U.S. cotton industry obviously knows how to turn on a dime. Prices are up, and before the planting season got fully under way, cotton growers were already reporting they plan to dramatically increase cotton acreage in 2010. California growers showed one of the largest anticipated turnarounds. Growers' upland planted acreage intentions in the state are 41% higher than in 2009, according to Prospective Plantings, a USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report, released March 31. That breaks a five-year declining trend in the state.
