YOU don't hear of too many people who go into cattle farming for their mental health, for artistic reasons or as a retirement gift to themselves. But then again, you don't meet too many people like James William Matthews of Momeyer, N.C., who went into the business for all three reasons. "I was approaching retirement age, I had some land and I'd always thought pastures with cows were beautiful, and I'd always wanted to be in the cattle business," Matthews says, "so I started part time before I retired. It was a real stress relief, and it keeps me active."
