Jeff Lautt, executive vice president of corporate operations for POET, says tlie Sioux Falls, South Dakota, company's cellulosic ethanol plant at Emmetsburg, Iowa, is about 18 months behind schedule. It now plans to start construction late this year and be online in 2012. The U.S. has an estimated 1 billion tons of biomass to tap for energy. At a potential yield of over 100 gallons of cellulosic ethanol a ton (80 currently is considered doable), it could replace most of our yearly gasoline use of 138 billion gallons.
