Each year, companies pitch their latest products at you. No doubt, some will bulge your billfold. Others won't. So how do you know which will pad profits? Todd Hays and his neighbors have one idea. Each spring, Hays, Monroe City, Missouri, plants several on-farm test plots to test various inputs. "At times, we have had five different trials going on in a field, on 10 to 12 acres each," says Hays, who farms with his wife, Rosanne; father-in-law, Gene Ketsenburg; and brother-in-law David Ketsenburg.
