Emptying grain bins is a hard, hot, and dirty job. Equipped with a grain vac that conveys over 1,200 bushels per hour, it's a more manageable task. But serious risks lurk beneath the surface. "Grain vacuums are used with little or no awareness of thehazards," says Bill Field, Purdue University professor and Extension safety specialist. "They were involved in 21 documented cases of engulfrnent or entrapment from 1988 to 2012. Of these cases, 16 were fatalities.
