2008 planting estimates: The acreage picture that appears fuzzy in March gets clearer in June

In June, USDA will estimate how many acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat the U.S. producers planted in 2008. These estimates are revisions of the annual March Planting Intentions report. Because the spring started with very wet conditions for most of the southern and Midwest Corn Belt, producers who intended to plant corn may have had to switch to soybeans. But, the higher corn market may have lured many to plant corn at the very last minute. Thus, the USDA's March 31 Planting Intentions estimates are expected by market analysts to be adjusted noticeably on June 30.
