The bamboo screen1 is a Chinese 'trellis' or 'fence' made with bamboo supports up which creepers are trained and shaped into a screen. The trellis has a long history in the West, as seen, for example, in the trellises and pergolas depicted in frescosfrom the remains of Pompeii.2 Further, many paintings from the Middle Ages show tall trellises, tunnel arbors, and arcades decorated with roses, carnations, pinks, vines, and oranges. Clearly, the trellis has historically been regarded as an element thatadds beauty and interest to the landscape.
