Hortus moralis: C.C.L. Hirschfeld and other eighteenth-century actors in theDanish—German Borderland

German culture is gaining in interest and fascination. Following the Mauerfall in 1989, the reunification and Berlin's rise as a modern capital, Germany is no longer what it used to be. Not surprisingly, this development has changed many an academic approach too. From a Danish viewpoint, a series of topics originating in the longstanding and close links between Denmark and Germany — in political, dynastic and cultural respects — are again being accorded the attention they rightfully deserve. Several Danish architects and landscape architects have received large commissions within the past two to three decades for Berlin and other important building sites in Germany. Henrik August Flindt (1822-1901) and Gudmund Nyeland Brandt (1878-1945), two of the leading Danish gardeners of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, were strongly influenced by German colleagues, nurseries and gardens. Both had first-hand experience of German horticultural practice. In fact, the phenomenon of Danish—German connections in horticulture and garden aesthetics may be traced several centuries back. Such connections thus thrived during the centuries of Absolutism.
