摘要

The foundations of international arid zone rehabilitation science reside in the pioneering work of Albert Morris (1886-1939),1 in conjunction with his wife Margaret nee Sayce (1882—1957), at Broken Hill in Australia (figures 1 and 2). Broken Hill's massive silver, lead and zinc orebody, discovered in 1883, is a place where much of Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton (BHP) began as companies.~2 The Morris' pioneered arid zone re-vegetation techniques and established a series of reserves around Broken Hill toreduce the environmental impacts of this mining landscape. These 'Regeneration Reserves', or 'green belts', gazetted in 1937, comprise some 1715 ha of land within the overall Willyama Common of approximately 13 km~2. The Morris' initiatives and actions created a unique designed landscape integral to the character and aesthetic quality of Broken Hill and the theory and evolution of this designed landscape is discussed in this article.
