Nurseries and nurserymen in Ireland from the early eighteenth to the early twenty-first century

Irrespective of landscape design trends or planting styles over the centuries, cultivated shrubs in the form of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants have been a major component in gardens and designed landscapes. The nursery trade, through its nurseries and nurserymen, has supplied landowners and garden owners with such species and cultivars. Some nurseries had an international clientele for their extensive range of plants, while others supplied the local market often with a limited selection. Some firms were family run over several generations while others ceased to trade after a number of years. Some nurseries diversified into garden design, landscape contracting and garden maintenance. Several nurserymen were of great consequence and received international recognition for their contribution to the trade, as plantsmen and plant breeders. This paper charts the development of nurseries in Ireland from the early eighteenth to the early twenty-first century.
