Mass spectrometry in Africa and its role in environmental monitoring and the preservation of endangered species

The Foundation for Analytical Science &Technology in Africa (FASTA) is a chari-table company that was established in2005 in response to a request to providea GC-MS to the Jomo Kenyatta Universityof Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT) inNairobi, Kenya. FASTA was founded bySteve Lancaster of BP and Barrie Nixonof Mass Spec UK Ltd. The objectives ofthe organisation are to support scientificeducation, analytical research and the"preservation of the environment in Africavia capacity-building and technologytransfer. Several organisations, includ-ing The Royal Society of Chemistry, TheBritish Mass Spectrometry Society, MassSpec UK, Pfizer, BP, PerkinElmer andDionex, amongst others, have providedgenerous grants and donated equip-ment. Their support has been critical inallowing FASTA to set up the first GC-MSlaboratory at JKUAT.
