Over 10 waste heat recovery systems have been installed on commercial container glass furnaces and have achieved significant fuel reduction. Several of these furnaces are oxy-fuel fired furnaces equipped with batch/cullet preheaters, and they have demonstrated specific fuel consumption of 2.8 to 3 MMBTU/ton for container glass with 50-60% cullet when the batch/cullet was preheated to about 600 to 700 F. This represents energy savings of about 30% relative to state-of-the-art regenerative furnaces. Praxair is currently developing a new advanced batch/cullet preheater system designed specifically for oxy-fuel fired glass furnaces. A 15 tpd pilot system has been built at the Praxair Technology Center in Tonawanda, NY and preliminary results indicate batch/cullet preheat temperatures approaching 1000F can be achieved with this technology. It is estimated that a commercial version of this system will enable container glass furnaces to operate with projected specific fuel consumption as low as 2.5 MMBTU/ton.
