IN THE eternal search for novel and improved analytical methods, ever more stringent demands are placed on newly developed instrumental techniques. Such new techniques must offer substantial performance benefits, in terms of cost, speed, detection limits, reliability, simplicity of operation, applicability and range of analyte species, or risk rejection in the face of considerable competition from currently available instrumentation. One technique which has faced great difficulties in asserting its position is electrothermal atomic emission spectrometry (ETAES).
