News on fundamental reference data

The spectra of neutral and singly ionized iron continue to be of great interest, primarily because of urgent astronomical needs for such data. A new, much expanded multiplet table of Fe I has been published by Nave et al. [1] which contains about 9500lines in the spectral range from 170 to 5000 nm (5 firn) Many of the spectral data are from new improved observations with high resolution instruments, both grating as well as Fourier transform spectrometers Most of the increases in observational data have occurred in the near UV and near IR. The new multiplet table includes oscillator strength data for about 2650 lines which have been taken mainly from the 1988 critical compilation by Fuhr et al. [2] and from the work of O'Brian et al [3]. The table may be obtained via anonymous ftp from ferrum fysik.lu.se (130235.92.170) at Lund University, in the directory pub/iron.
