A survey of 25 emerging market economies conducted in the year 2000 by Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia put India sixth in respect of corporate governance, whereas China ranked 19th. In a recent survey of leading Asian companies carried out by the Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER), India registered a higher average score than any other country in the region, including China. Over the last 10 years, only China has boasted a higher GDP than India and grown faster. Owing to the size of their markets, both China and India have enormous potential for growth and upward economic development. Tab. 1 shows the growth figures of the fastest growing countries for the period 1991 to 2000.
