Special steel meltshop in operation at Charter steel, Cleveland (OH), USA

On June 15th 2006, the first heats were performed successfully at Charter Steel's new steelmaking facility, marking the start of the hot-run stage for this state-of-the-art special steel meltshop designed to support Charter Steel's rod and bar-in-coil rolling mill in Cuyahoga Heights, near Cleveland. One month after the start, tuning of the operations proceeded well allowing the company to continue to ramp up production. Meanwhile, some billets in the lower-grade range already have been applied to orders. The new plant is made up basically of a 75-t EAF, LF, singletank VD unit and a four-strand conticaster designed to cast up to 200-mm square sections, in a large variety of grades ranging from carbon to alloy steels for cold heading, cold forging, specialty spring, bearing, high-carbon, and free-machining steels for automotive, aerospace, agricultural, and construction applications.
