Bridgeview, a high-density apartment complex in the heart of Johannesburg, has made history of a kind for South Africa's building construction industry. The five-storey building is the tallest structure so far where Echo Prestress hollow-core concrete flooring panels have been employed. The project, on a confined 6 000sq m building site in Braamfontein overlooking the M1 Smit Street off-ramp and the Nelson Mandela Bridge, required the use of two cranes to hoist the floor panels into position on the load-bearing masonry structure - a 30-ton mobile crane and a tower crane for the topmost levels.
